Who doesn’t like taking a vacation? Since it’s the summer I figured this would be a timely post since so many people are taking time off to go away.
I you are like me, you probably like to share on Instagram the places you travel on vacation and share with your followers a glimpse of your travel destination and experiences while away.
Using a hashtag is also a great way to help others find new and exciting vacation destinations and experiences.
How to Use a Hashtag
You can add hashtags in the caption or comments of your post. If you add hashtags to a post that’s set to public, the post will be visible on the corresponding hashtag page.
To tag a photo or video with a hashtag:
Take or upload a photo or video. Choose to add a filter, then type # followed by text or emoji in the Caption field (ex: #vacation)
If you want to add a hashtag to a post you’ve already uploaded, edit the caption or include your hashtag in a comment on your photo.
After you tag your post with a hashtag, you’ll be able to tap the hashtag to see a page that shows all photos and videos people have uploaded with that hashtag.
Things to keep in mind:
When people with private profiles tag posts, they won’t appear publicly on hashtag pages.
Numbers are allowed in hashtags. However, spaces and special characters, like $ or %, won’t work.
You can only tag your own posts. You can’t tag other people’s photos/videos.
You can use up to 30 tags on a post. If you include more than 30 tags on a single photo/video, your comment won’t post.
Best Vacation Hashtags for Instagram
Here’s some of the best vacation hashtags and tips I’ve found to use on Instagram and help you get started with sharing your photos. If you have any favourite hashtags you use while on vacation let me know in the comments.
Keep in mind you can only use a maximum of 30 hashtags in your Instagram posts.
Hashtag Your Destination
Your first vacation hashtag should always be your destination. Your followers will definitely want to know where you are! For example, on my trip to Tahiti last year I used the hashtag #lovetahiti on each of my Instagram posts to let everyone know where I was. The reason for this hashtag over just #tahiti is because it is the hashtag that the Official Tahiti Tourisme Board uses for a chance to be featured on their Instagram feed.
Before you go away do some research on Instagram of the area and country you are going to and find out if there is any specific hashtags to use other than just the countries name.
I also recommend you hashtag the local area you are visiting. It helps you get found but also helps others who are researching the area find new and exciting places to visit when they are there on vacation. Simply go to the Instagram search box and type in the city you are visiting. Popular hashtags other people in the city are using will show up for your reference.
Hashtag Your Surroundings
What are you taking a picture of? Hashtag what your photo features. Are you laying on the beach? You could try these hashtags for example:
You get the idea! Be creative!
I got to tag along with some of the @journeysbyescapes agents on a trip to Mexico last week. One of the highlights was getting to see @delsolphoto during a sunrise photoshoot on the beach. So amazing to see them work their magic! #photooftheday #photo #beach #mexico #sunrise #mayanriviera #sonya6000 #amazing #vacation #delsolphotography #escapesvacations
Describe the Occasion
Are you on vacation for a special occasion or visiting a popular restaurant? Eg: Destination Wedding, Birthday Party, Anniversary, Holiday etc. These hashtags are extremely popular:
Again, be creative with your hashtags!

After you add hashtags to your photos or video you’ll also want to tag the location to help other people find out about the great places you’ve explored. Here’s how to do it!
How to add a location before sharing your photo or video
After you upload or take a photo or video and add any effects or filters you want, you can add your location.
To add your location:
1. Tap Add Location
2. Find your location in the suggestions or search for the location and select it
3. Tap Share
You can also add or edit the location of a photo or video you’ve already posted.
While on vacation you’ll want to keep your phone charged! There is nothing worse than being out exploring an amazing destination only to have your phone or camera die and you can’t take any pictures. I recommend picking up an external charger to keep your devices charged up. A good inexpensive one is the iMuto 20000mAh Portable Charger from Amazon. It’s only $29 and can charge up your phone and/or camera over 5 times.
